Spin-offs and rewrites of Jane Eyre

The podcast called "Charlotte Bronte at 200: stories inspired by Jane Eyre" lists a few spin-offs or stories that were inspired by Jane Eyre. There are many books that allude to popular literature and that may be just a similar theme or characters. Sometimes authors just want to create a new ending to the original story or they use the original characters and put them in different settings. I personally would like to rewrite the ending and make the last sentence be, "Reader, I married him" because the way that Jane had been telling her story to the reader throughout the book would have made the ending more dramatic and bring back memories if it was done that way. Then I would have everything else that is originally in the last chapter rewrote to fit into the chapters before. So, what do you think? Do you think that you would want the ending to be changed or do you like it the way it is? Do you think that there is a specific meaning behind Charlotte Bronte writing the ending the way that she did?

  1. Personally, I like the way the ending is with all of the information after ¨Reader, I married him¨ However, I wish this information was spread out over the span of a few more chapters. And maybe I would have liked to have it end on a topic other than St. Johns death.
