How were men in Jane's life of "gothic" nature?

Once I was done listening to the BBC podcast, I came to the conclusion that many of the men in Jane's life were following the gothic theme. I think this is because Charlotte Bronte mixed her life into the book and how men may have treated her. Take for example, in Lowood Brocklehurst was very strict and rude as some may say which fit the characteristic of men in that era. Another great example was how Mr. Rochester acted. When Jane first met Mr. Rochester he was a rude man and didn't treat people nicely which was a great example of gothic era men.  What other men (or women) in the book did you think fit the gothic theme? Do you agree/disagree? Why?

  1. I agree with you. Most of the men in Jane's life where quite hostile. However, so were most of the people in Jane's life. Starting with Mrs. Reed who treated her like a troublesome thing. Then with some of the teachers and girls at lowood who made fun of her and treated her poorly. Then there was Bertha who words cannot describe. SO I believe that it not only the men in her life but all aspects of it that prove to be Gothic.
