What do the Gothic elements in Jane Eyre contribute to the story?

Throughout the whole story so far, I have seen that the Gothic elements have made the tone and mood of the story change quite a bit. The book starts off with dark and cold weather, and when she is locked in the red room, she hears a ghost and thinks that it is her uncle. What else have you seen in this book that has a Gothic element in it?
