What is the real reason for Mrs. Reed despising Jane?
For obvious reasons Mrs. Reed has been given the burden of taking care of Jane until she grows up. But there has to be more than that; as readers we know that Jane came from Mr. Reed's sister and that's where I believe the whole resentment starts. My belief is that possibly something happened between Mrs. Reed and Mr. Reed's family. Possibly an argument or Mrs. Reed did not like the way they did things possibly? Please comment and explain your own opinion on this.

From what I've read so far, I don't think there's any one reason. A very real one could be that she just hates Jane, she rarely shows any sort of affection towards her. As you mentioned, Jane's mother left the reed family to go marry Jane's dad so that could be another reason. Personally, I think Mrs. Reed hates Jane because she reminds her of her dead husband who made her promise to take care of Jane.
ReplyDeleteI believe there's a multitude of different reasons for Mrs. Reed to hate Jane. I believe Davian is onto something with his idea. I personally believe Mrs. Reed just likes to have power over someone. Her own children don't really respect her and always get their way, so I feel Mrs. Reed just enjoys abusing Jane just for her own amusement. It's also stated in the book a few times that Mrs. Reed believes Jane did nothing to deserve a life of luxury and so she probably just doesn't think Jane is worthy to live alongside her and her family.
