Is Jane suicidal?

In chapter 2, Jane mentions being habitually depressed. She wonders if she should believe that she is a wicked thing, as Mrs. Reed always tells her. Has her aunt been too convincing? It certainly seems so, as Jane ponders if she should just do the 'right thing' and starve herself to death. Do you think she has enough reason to convince herself to actually go through with it?

  1. Zoe, I think you are on to something here. Her aunt has been too convincing, she is the only real family figure Jane has so her word is the closest thing to having her mom. I don't believe so, or at least not at this point. When you read later on you see she starts to fall apart slightly with a death, but then improves from it. With her age at that time it slowly adds to her mentality.

  2. I agree with you Zoe. I'm sure that we will find out more later on in the book. From being mistreated to being abused it seems reasonable for her situation. Lots of kids her age show signs of suicide but as I read later in the book I'm beginning to think it was more of a phase. I don't believe she has enough reason to go through with it, but she definitely shows signs of being suicidal.

  3. Zoe,I do believe she was suicidal at this time. Mrs. Reed is like a mother figure to Jane and I feel this is why she takes her harsh words so heavily. Reading farther into the book it becomes clear that Jane was only in a phase. She did hint at suicidal behavior, but I feel there wouldn't be enough reasoning to proceed with such actions.

  4. I absolutely agree with you Zoe. I believe that she was suicidal at this time, as she had pretty much no one to talk to, and has no friends. She is sent to the red room, where someone already died, so I think this also contributes to the fact that she is suicidal. She needed a nicer guardian in her life, and Mrs. Reed just wasn't cutting it. I do believe that now she is at a new school and has friends, that she is no longer suicidal.
