Is Mr. Rochester rude or just awkward?

I've noticed many times when Mr.Rochester speaks he seems to have this awkwardness about him. Is this because he has liked Jane ever since he met her? Or is he really just being rude. For example, when Jane and Mr.Rochester first officially meet, he keeps his attention focused on Adele and his dog. At first this might just be seen as rude but he may have just been preparing himself for what to say or how to act.

    I feel he is just socially awkward. He wan't really prepared for Jane's arrival in my opinion. Much like she wasn't prepared for him. I feel like he didn't have much exposer to people as a child, but tried to make up for it with his travels. Later on he seemingly becomes less awkward.

    I feel it is a mixture of both. He is socially awkward, but he also is rude at sometimes. This could be just because of his past. He also has feelings for Jane that he doesn't know how to handle them. These feelings haven't worked out for him well in the past.
