Is Jane Eyre a Bildungsroman novel?

Many people see Jane Eyre as a coming of age novel or Bildungsroman. I feel that Charlotte Bronte represents this as a coming of age novel because it shows Jane total growth throughout the story. I believe that it all starts off at Gateshead. As Jane hasn't really found out who she is yet she realizes some of the characteristics she doesn't want to obtain, ones that Mrs. Reed does. Her move to Lowood really changed who she was as she became a more independent person and started to grow into herself a bit. Finally being located at Thornfield she is more independent than she had ever been and she is allowed to grow into the person she wants to be. There are other novels out there that show growth of a character but I feel that Jane Eyre is a prime example of a Bildungsroman novel.

  1. I would agree that this is a Bildungsroman novel. Throughout the book Jane matures as a women and as a character. Being at Thornfield and taking care of Adele is a huge show that she has become more independent and mature.
