Is Jane Eyre autobiographical?
I believe Charlotte Bronte wrote Jane Eyre as a sort of loose biography. Many similarities can be drawn such as the settings, characters, occupations, and family. Bronte seems to take a lot of inspiration from her own life as well as adding subplots in order to make it more interesting. I think she decided to make a novel instead of an autobiography so she could have more artistic liberty and not have to stick strictly to facts.

I see a lot of moments in the book where it can be seen that it is a biography. Overall I don't think it is. The whole story line just is not related. What is related is more of the smaller moments. For example, the whole theme that she Jane is trying to find her true self. That is very autobiographical. Although, how she was a teacher at a school called Lowood is not true to Charlotte Bronte. So big picture probably not but the small moments absolutely it is.
ReplyDeleteI would say that there are definitely some parts of the book that could be assumed as biographic. There are themes that appear both in Jane and Charlotte's life that are just too similar to mark down to coincidence. Even if Bronte didn't want the book to be autobiographical, I think she definitely looked to her own life as inspiration for parts of the story or characters.
