Steinbeck's Typewriter: Essays on His Art

In John Steinbeck's The Grapes of Wrath we see, within the first few chapters, that he has strong and controversial opinions on many things. For instance, in chapter 4 Casy says this: "Maybe it ain't sin. Maybe it's just the way folks is"(23). This is an example of one of his controversial opinions. When talking about the topic "Readers Reactions" we can see that there could be many different opinions when it comes to sin and religion. After looking into the book: Steinbeck's Typewriter: Essays on His Art by Robert Demott I have found that Steinbeck was intentional with putting intense opinions in his writing. He wanted to make the readers dissatisfied after reading this novel. It says, "I read those thingd not as books but as things that happened to me"(17). This is connected to his intense opinions because it shows that they way he reads and writes is through his own experiences. This is meaning that his opinions are portrayed throughout the whole book.
