Why was Jane so equally drawn to Mr. Rochester and St. John Rivers?
The two men have many huge differences in personality and in morals. The main difference that I observed between the two, is selfishness and selflessness. Rochester seemed very self absorbed to me. He faked an engagement just to seem more desirable and to make Jane jealous. He also was willing to take Jane's innocence and marry her unlawfully purely for his own desire to love and be loved. St. John, on the other hand, did nothing for himself. He would risk his safety and his life to ride out into a stormy night to help a family in need, and truly was the dictionary definition of a philanthropist or good Samaritan.

Jane finds both men intriguing, in my opinion, for there passion for something. Rochester's passion was Jane and winning her over no matter the costs. St.John's passion was his missionary work. He believed solely in it and didn't let anything get in the way.
ReplyDeleteIn my opinion, Jane likes both men for different reasons. With Mr. Rochester, Jane liked his passion and outward emotion. St. John Rivers was almost the exact opposite of Rochester. Whereas, Rochester is not very handsome, St. John is considered to be very handsome. St. John is full of devotion but he keeps it to himself and doesn't always outwardly express his emotion. With these two men, Jane gets to experience both of the extremes in people.
