Roles of Men and Women

The article that I read, Mother's of the Great Depression: Asthetic Intent of Ma Joad, it says that Stenbeck wanted to build Ma's character up as much as possible. It also shows how all of the other characters are affected by the lack of food and it shows all of the ways that the women impacted or were impacted during the Great Depression. It also states that Ma was an important role in the family and their lives.

  1. In a way I see that Ma is in the role of the male of the family. When the drought got tough it was the males job to show that nothing was wrong and to just support the family. Ma shows a strong face through the whole book but when she broke, everyone broke and realized what big trouble they were in.

  2. I agree, the women were impacted a lot during the Great Depression having to take on motherly roles and work. I think this is where the role working mother really appears because before this not many women had jobs it was mainly the men who had to find jobs and money to support the family. But, in the Great Depression the mothers have to find a job and get money to support the family as well but the males maintain the same role as the moneymaker.

  3. I agree, the women had to stay strong even when times were tough. Women had to take the role as mothers and have their children and husbands look to them for support to stay strong as well. Ma played this role well and you can easily tell when things started to get too tough to handle when the family started to lose people. I think that that was when the family looked to Ma for support and caused Ma to put up a tough front to make it seem like they could get through it, but that tough front started to fall after a while and everyone knew it and also became more depressed.

  4. I agree that Ma had to stay strong during this time. She does a great job of trying keep everyone together creating a family environment. She took a lot of responsibility and almost everyone could rely on her if they needed. Ma had to balance the regular roles of a mother and working at the same time. Eventually she couldn't do it on her own and they lost people but this was never her fault because she had good intentions.
