Is the Gothic theme shown through all of the different places that Jane had moved to?
I watched the BBC Radio “In Our Time” Podcast. I really liked how the people that were talking went into depth with the story and also talked about Charlotte Bronte’s life and how Jane Eyre was written like her life. What I didn’t like about it was the fact that right at the beginning of the podcast, like 10 minutes in, it gave away the ending of the book. Something that I found really interesting and hadn’t really thought of is that the Gothic theme is shown through all of the different places that Jane had moved to. From Gateshead, Lowood, Thornfield, and finally Fernhead, there was some sort of mystery to them all and they were all a bit creepy. At each of the places there are a lot of different emotions and there is always a change of scene. Any thoughts?

I do believe there is always a Gothic theme at any point in the book. The Gothic theme, most of the times, is proven not supernatural. For example, at Thronfield, there were weird occasions of people getting bit and beds being set ablaze. This is later found out that it was a mad lady in the house. Although some of the places are difficult to find a Gothic theme, making it hard to find a solution. In all, I believe that the Gothic themes in Jane Eyre can be proven as a natural occurrence.
ReplyDeleteI do believe that what you are saying is correct. There has always been a dreary haze over each of the locations. This explains why there is a Gothic theme for each of the places where she lived
