Why did Mr.Rochester create the bed on fire scenario?

Mr.Rochester had the bed on fire scenario setup because he was gaining feelings toward Jane Eyre. Jane had also gained feelings for Mr.Rochester even though Mr.Rochester was rude and wasn't the nicest to her, but Mr.Rochester wanted her to show it. With the bed on fire scenario, it was setup so Jane would "save his life" and he would be able to express his feelings toward her. In my mind he thought that Jane would pretty much express her feelings after too, and in a way she did. Why do you think Mr.Rochester chose to create the bed on fire scenario?
