I don't really feel like it is yet. I mean you do see the budding relationship, but not really the full-blown lovey-doveyness like one would see in a typical romance today. I understand you need to wait to fan the flames effectively, no pun intended, but it just doesn't seem to click between Mr. Rochester and Jane. What do you think about it?
I believe it is by no means a classic romance novel. Bronte even said that her romance was to be not plain like Pride and Prejudice. In a way, the reader has to look past the idea of a classic romance novel to see Bronte's view. This is what puts the books apart from all of the other romance novels. Instead of looking at it from the regular point of view, look at with a broad view. Towards the end of the reading, it appears to have more romance than the rest of the book. I believe that this book wasn't meant to be all romance but a little of it was. In all, this book most likely isn't seen as a classic romance novel, because it doesn't follow the class structure of that novel.

ReplyDeleteI agree about it not being a classic romance, as there were many obstacles of class and time in the way, but I'm going to have to disagree with you about the lack of a "click" between Jane and Edward. While by our modern day standards, they might not have been very flirty and lovey-dovey, the two were able to share quite a few spark inducing intellectual conversations. In addition, while they were apart, we know from Jane she felt a deep longing for him, a longing she once described as her soul or spirit almost searching for his.
ReplyDeleteI don't think that it is a real "lovey-dovey" relationship yet. What we have read so far makes me think that it could happen, though it would take some time because of how Jane grew up and is not used to love. It will most likely take some time for Jane to over come this but I think that it is possible for this book to become more of a romance novel towards the end.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you Tana. Things really haven't set in between the two of them yet. I can see their relationship becoming more "lovey-dovey" in the future but as for now it isn't. The story itself is not your classic romance novel I feel as well.
