Is Bertha the manifestation of Jane Eyre's emotions?

Jane Eyre is a calm, reasonable woman most of the time and hardly ever gets truly angry or does anything rash. On the other hand, Bertha is aggresive, violent, and crazy. Jane has described her fears about getting married, but never goes through doing anything about it. And that same night, Bertha rips up the veil, doing what Jane never would. Is it possible Bertha represents the repressed emotions that Jane has?

  1. This is a really intriguing idea Kyle, and I think it makes a lot of sense. As you mentioned, the reader can see that Jane is a calm generally collected sort of person. Bertha Mason is the exact opposite: Aggressive, violent and almost always uncontrollable. These emotions demonstrated by Bertha would be a near perfect foil to Jane and the mystery that surrounds Bertha means it might even be possible that Bertha is just a figment of Jane's imagination.
