Does Mr. Rochester feel embarrassed to like Jane?

There are multiple occasions where Mr. Rochester shows that he might have feelings for Jane Eyre but he always comes back with a rude comment or something against Jane. I think it has something to do with age but also that she is working for Mr. Rochester and it might look bad for Mr. Rochester.

  1. I don't think so. It kind-of seems like Mr. Rochester is as desperate to be with Jane as Jane is to be with Mr. Rochester. It always seems like Mr. Rochester wants to keep the conversation going with Jane, and when she wants to leave, he feels very reluctant.

  2. I don't think that Mr. Rochester is embarrassed but is rather hesitant or reluctant to show his feelings for Jane. Towards the end of chapter 17, when Mr. Rochester is talking to Jane, he suddenly stops himself from saying any more by biting his lip. I think that he was about to reveal his feeling to Jane if he would have continued.

  3. Mr. Rochester's mentality seems to be all over the place. I feel he may want something to develop but he also thinks of the class difference, age difference, and what others would think of the pairing. This means he could vary well be embarrassed or at least hesitant of his feelings.
