Did you see how Jane Eyre is a bildungsroman novel?

Many people see Jane Eyre as a bildungsroman novel, including me. A select few see this novel as a romance story, but I just don't quite see it that way. The way I see it is that the author, Charlotte Bronte, is trying to portray this novel as a coming of age book. She shows us that Jane starts from the bottom at Gateshead, where she was treated absolutely like garbage. She tells us that she then makes her way to Lowood, and then even eventually to Thornfield, where she works. She has become very independent at Thornfield, and Bronte shows us that she has made something out of nothing, going on a quest to independence.

  1. I agree with this and I believe Charlotte Bronte put the romance in there to create mystery in the book that is showing a character coming of age. With Rochester he adds life to the book, where as before Jane was living a mundane life without much excitement.
